Ausangate Trek

From US$300 per person

Description

The Ausangate Trek is one of the most spectacular high–Andean adventures in Peru, offering an immersive journey through breathtaking natural landscapes, remote traditional communities, and the imposing snow–capped peaks of the Vilcanota mountain range. Located southeast of Cusco, Mount Ausangate rises to 6,384 meters (20,945 ft) and is revered by local Quechua communities as an Apu, a sacred protector.
Over the course of six unforgettable days, you will walk through colorful valleys, cross high mountain passes above 5,000 meters, witness turquoise glacial lakes, and enjoy panoramic views of snow giants. The trek also passes near the famous Rainbow Mountain (Vinicunca), allowing you to experience its vibrant mineral colors in person.
This is not just a trek — it’s a cultural immersion. Along the way, you will encounter isolated Andean villages where herders live in harmony with nature, raising alpacas and llamas as they have for centuries. You’ll also have the chance to relax in natural hot springs under a sky illuminated by millions of stars.
The Ausangate Trek 6D/5N is a challenging but deeply rewarding experience for adventurers who wish to connect with Peru’s most pristine landscapes while embracing the spiritual significance of the Andes.

Itinerary

Día

1
Day 1: Cusco – Tinki – Upis (Hot Springs)

We begin our journey early in the morning with a scenic drive of approximately 3 hours from Cusco to the small Andean village of Tinki (3,900 m / 12,795 ft), passing through picturesque farming communities and fields where locals work the land using traditional techniques. Upon arrival, we meet our muleteers and support team, organize our gear, and enjoy a warm introduction to Andean hospitality.
The trek starts with a gentle uphill walk along well–worn paths used by shepherds, offering our first close–up views of Ausangate, the sacred mountain of the region. Along the way, we’ll spot herds of alpacas and llamas grazing freely, framed by the dramatic high–altitude landscape.
After a few hours of hiking, we reach Upis (4,100 m / 13,451 ft), where our campsite is located. In the afternoon, we can relax in the nearby natural hot springs, letting the warm mineral waters soothe our muscles while admiring the snowy peaks bathed in the golden light of sunset. Dinner will be served in our dining tent, followed by a restful night under a sky full of stars.

Day 2: Upis – Arapa Pass – Pucacocha Lake

After a hearty breakfast, we begin a gradual but steady ascent towards Arapa Pass (4,850 m / 15,912 ft). The path winds through open puna grasslands and small glacial streams, with breathtaking views of the surrounding mountains and their hanging glaciers. The silence of the high Andes, broken only by the occasional bird call, adds a sense of remoteness and tranquility.
From the top of Arapa Pass, a sweeping panorama of rugged peaks and deep valleys unfolds. We then begin our descent into a valley where the landscape changes to more colorful mineral–rich hillsides. By midday, we arrive at the stunning Pucacocha Lake, whose turquoise waters mirror the snow–capped peaks above.
The lake is a perfect spot for photography and quiet contemplation. After lunch, you can explore the area, capture the shifting reflections on the lake, and immerse yourself in the serene environment. We camp near the lake, where the clear night sky offers some of the best stargazing opportunities of the trek.

Día

Day 3: Pucacocha – Ausangate Pass – Palomani Pass – Pampacancha

This is one of the most physically demanding and visually rewarding days of the entire trek. We start with a climb to Ausangate Pass (4,900 m / 16,076 ft), where the mighty glacier of Ausangate looms dramatically overhead. The air is crisp and thin, but the views are more than worth the effort.
After a short descent into a wide glacial valley, we begin the challenging ascent to Palomani Pass (5,200 m / 17,060 ft) — the highest point of our journey. From here, the surrounding landscapes seem almost otherworldly, with vast snowfields, jagged peaks, and distant valleys stretching as far as the eye can see.
We take time to rest, absorb the grandeur of the Andes, and perhaps participate in a small apacheta (stone offering) ceremony to honor the mountains. Then, we descend into the lush Pampacancha Valley, where the vegetation is greener, and we often encounter herds of grazing alpacas tended by local families. We set up camp in this peaceful valley, surrounded by the sounds of nature.

Día

4
Day 4: Pampacancha – Jampa Pass – Comercocha Lake

The day begins with a gradual climb along a trail bordered by rolling hills and grazing areas until we reach the impressive Jampa Pass (5,070 m / 16,634 ft). From the pass, we are rewarded with spectacular views of glaciers, high–altitude lagoons, and the jagged peaks of the Vilcanota Mountain Range.
As we descend from the pass, the trail leads us to Comercocha Lake, an emerald–green gem nestled at the foot of the mountains. The area is rich in wildlife, so keep an eye out for Andean geese, condors, and vizcachas — small rabbit–like creatures that dart between the rocks.
We arrive at our campsite by mid–afternoon, giving us time to rest, explore the shores of the lake, or simply enjoy the peaceful environment as the mountains reflect the warm colors of sunset.

Día

5
Day 5: Comercocha Lake – Pacchanta Hot Springs

Today’s trek offers a more relaxed pace as we descend through rolling hills, past small streams, and traditional stone houses belonging to local herders. By late morning, we arrive at Pacchanta, a charming Andean village famous for its rejuvenating hot springs.
Here, we can soak in the warm mineral waters while gazing at the distant snowy peak of Ausangate, reflecting on the incredible journey we’ve just experienced. In the afternoon, you can take a short walk around the village to observe daily life and learn more about the customs of the local Quechua–speaking people.
We spend the night camping near the hot springs, with the opportunity to enjoy another evening of stargazing in this tranquil Andean setting.

Día

6
Day 6: Pacchanta – Tinki – Cusco

After an unhurried breakfast, we set out on the final stretch of our trek, walking for approximately 3 hours back to Tinki. The route offers one last chance to enjoy the fresh mountain air, the sight of grazing animals, and the peacefulness of the high Andes.
Once in Tinki, we say farewell to our trekking team and begin our drive back to Cusco, arriving in the afternoon. This marks the end of our unforgettable Ausangate adventure, a journey through remote landscapes, vibrant culture, and the heart of Peru’s sacred mountains.
