Description

The Inca Jungle Trek is one of the most exciting and diverse routes to reach the legendary citadel of Machu Picchu. Unlike the traditional Inca Trail, this journey combines thrilling adventure sports with breathtaking hikes through varied landscapes. Over the course of four unforgettable days, travelers can enjoy downhill mountain biking from the high Andes, trekking through lush cloud forests and tropical valleys, and optional adrenaline-filled activities such as white-water rafting and zip-lining.

This route is perfect for adventurous spirits seeking more than just a hike — it’s an opportunity to immerse yourself in the natural beauty and living culture of the Cusco region. You will witness dramatic changes in scenery, from snow-capped mountain passes to warm, green valleys filled with coffee and coca plantations. Along the way, you’ll explore remote Andean communities, walk along sections of the original Inca Trail, and encounter hidden archaeological remains that whisper stories of the past.

By combining adventure, culture, and nature, the Inca Jungle Trek offers an unforgettable and authentic approach to discovering Machu Picchu — one where every day brings a new experience, every step reveals a new landscape, and the journey itself becomes just as extraordinary as the destination.

Itinerary

Día

1
Day 1: Cusco – Abra Málaga – Santa María (Biking & Optional Rafting)

Your adventure begins early in the morning with a pick-up from your hotel in Cusco. We travel by private transport through the scenic Sacred Valley of the Incas, passing by traditional villages, terraced farmlands, and the rushing waters of the Urubamba River. As we climb higher into the Andes, the landscape changes dramatically — from fertile valleys to rugged mountain slopes — until we reach the impressive Abra Málaga Pass (4,316 m / 14,160 ft). Here, the crisp mountain air and panoramic views of snow-capped peaks provide the perfect backdrop for the start of our adventure.

After a short safety briefing, we gear up with helmets, gloves, and professional biking equipment. The downhill ride begins on a paved mountain road that winds through the highlands before gradually entering the lush cloud forest. Over the course of approximately 55 kilometers, you’ll witness a striking change in climate and vegetation — from the cool, thin air of the Andes to the warm, tropical environment of the jungle. Along the way, we pass sparkling waterfalls, fields of coffee and coca, avocado orchards, and small Andean hamlets where life moves at a tranquil pace.

By mid-afternoon, we arrive at the town of Santa María (1,250 m / 4,101 ft), a warm and welcoming spot nestled in the jungle. Here you can relax and enjoy the slower pace of life, or, for those seeking more excitement, participate in an optional rafting excursion (grade III–IV) along the Urubamba River. This activity combines adrenaline-pumping rapids with breathtaking views of surrounding mountains and dense vegetation.

In the evening, we gather for a hearty dinner made with fresh local ingredients and settle into a comfortable local guesthouse, ready for the adventures of the next day.

Día

2
Day 2: Santa María – Qellomayo – Santa Teresa (Hiking & Optional Hot Springs)

After a nourishing breakfast, we set out on a day of exploration through the lush tropical landscapes of the Peruvian jungle. Our path begins with a gradual ascent along trails surrounded by dense vegetation, alive with the sounds of exotic birds and the gentle rustle of leaves. As we walk, the scenery opens to reveal coffee and cacao plantations, as well as groves of tropical fruits such as bananas, oranges, and papayas. Along the way, we are welcomed by local families, offering a glimpse into traditional Andean–Amazonian farming practices that have remained unchanged for generations.

Mid-morning, we reach a preserved section of the original Inca Trail, where the stone pathways, meticulously laid centuries ago, still stand firm against time. Our guide shares the fascinating history of this ancient road network, explaining its strategic role in connecting remote settlements to the Inca heartland. Walking along these ridges, we are rewarded with spectacular vistas of plunging valleys, terraced hillsides, and distant snow-capped mountains peeking above the horizon.

We make our way down to the quaint village of Qellomayo, where a freshly prepared lunch awaits us in a local eatery. Energized, we continue the final stretch toward Santa Teresa (1,550 m / 5,085 ft), crossing rustic bridges and following riverside paths that lead us deeper into the warm, green heart of the jungle.

In the late afternoon, travelers seeking relaxation can visit the Cocalmayo Hot Springs (optional), a natural wonder where crystal-clear thermal pools are set against a backdrop of jungle-covered hills. Here, you can soak tired muscles while the golden glow of the sunset reflects on the water — a truly serene experience after a rewarding day of trekking.

In the evening, we gather for dinner featuring local flavors, before retiring to a comfortable guesthouse in Santa Teresa to rest for the next day’s journey.

Día

3
Day 3: Santa Teresa – Hidroeléctrica – Aguas Calientes (Optional Zip-lining & Hike)

We begin the day with a hearty breakfast to fuel us for another unforgettable adventure. For those eager to add an extra rush of adrenaline, the morning offers the optional zip-lining experience — one of the most exhilarating activities in the region. Suspended high above the valley, you’ll soar from platform to platform, taking in panoramic views of lush jungle hillsides, winding rivers, and distant mountain peaks. The sensation of flying through the open air, combined with the breathtaking scenery, makes this an unmissable highlight for thrill-seekers.

Travelers who prefer a calmer morning can enjoy a leisurely start, soaking in the peaceful atmosphere of Santa Teresa, before rejoining the group for the next stage of our journey.

From here, we transfer to Hidroeléctrica, where a freshly prepared lunch awaits us. Afterward, we set off on a scenic 3-hour hike following the train tracks toward Aguas Calientes (also known as Machu Picchu Pueblo). This path meanders alongside the mighty Urubamba River, with its rushing waters guiding our way. We pass cascading waterfalls, stretches of dense vegetation alive with the calls of tropical birds, and occasional clearings that reveal a first glimpse of Machu Picchu’s towering cliffs shrouded in mist — a tantalizing preview of the wonder we’ll explore tomorrow.

By late afternoon, we arrive in Aguas Calientes, a charming town nestled at the foot of the mountains. After settling into our hotel, we gather for a delicious dinner at a local restaurant, sharing stories of our adventures so far. The evening is yours to relax, explore the town’s artisan shops, or simply rest — tomorrow is the grand finale of our trek: the visit to the majestic citadel of Machu Picchu.

Día

Day 4: Machu Picchu – Cusco

Before dawn, we wake to the anticipation of our journey’s highlight. After an early breakfast, we board one of the first buses ascending the winding road to Machu Picchu (2,430 m / 7,972 ft). As we arrive, the ancient citadel slowly emerges from the morning mist, and if weather permits, we are rewarded with the unforgettable sight of the sun rising over the surrounding peaks, casting a golden glow across the stone structures.

Our expertly guided tour (approximately 2 hours) takes us deep into the history, architecture, and mysteries of this UNESCO World Heritage Site. We’ll explore its most emblematic areas, including the Temple of the Sun, the Intihuatana — the sacred solar clock of the Incas — the Temple of the Condor, ceremonial plazas, and the breathtaking agricultural terraces that cling to the mountainside. Along the way, our guide will share fascinating insights into the citadel’s spiritual significance and its role in the Inca Empire.

After the guided portion, you’ll have free time to wander at your own pace, capturing photos from unique angles or embarking on optional hikes to Huayna Picchu or Machu Picchu Mountain (both require advance reservations). These climbs offer unparalleled panoramic views of the citadel and the surrounding valleys, making them the perfect finale to your trekking adventure.

In the afternoon, we descend to Aguas Calientes, where you can enjoy a final meal in town before boarding the train back to Ollantaytambo. From there, a private transfer will take us to Cusco, arriving in the evening with memories and photographs of a journey that blends adventure, culture, and natural beauty.

Day 5: Chiquisca – Capuliyoc – Cusco

We start our final trekking day early, enjoying a hearty breakfast to fuel the challenging ascent ahead. The trail from Chiquisca to Capuliyoc (2,850 m / 9,350 ft) is a steady climb of approximately 4 hours, winding up the side of the canyon. The crisp morning air, combined with the golden light of sunrise, paints the surrounding mountains in warm hues and casts dramatic shadows over the Apurímac River far below. Although the incline is demanding, frequent rest stops allow us to catch our breath, hydrate, and take in the incredible scenery — from the deep, rugged canyon to distant snowcapped peaks and glistening glaciers on the horizon.

As we ascend, the vegetation begins to change, shifting from semi-tropical foliage to the more arid high-Andean landscape. Each turn of the trail offers a new perspective, reminding us of the distance and altitude we’ve conquered over the past days. Reaching the Capuliyoc viewpoint feels like both a triumph and a farewell — here, we pause for one last look at the breathtaking expanse of the canyon and the hidden sanctuary of Choquequirao, now tucked away behind the mountains.

At Capuliyoc, we meet our muleteers for a warm farewell and share words of gratitude for their invaluable support during the trek. From here, our private vehicle awaits to take us back to Cusco. The drive offers its own rewards, as we pass through picturesque Andean villages, terraced farmlands, and scenic viewpoints where we can stretch our legs and capture the last photos of the journey.

By late afternoon, we arrive in Cusco, where the lively streets and colonial architecture welcome us back to the city. The trek may have ended, but the memories of the Apurímac Canyon and the majestic Choquequirao will remain vivid for years to come. Dinner and overnight in Cusco are on your own, allowing you to choose from the city’s many excellent restaurants and enjoy a well-earned rest.

Día

Day 6: Cusco – Free Morning / Departure

After several days of trekking through remote mountains and immersing ourselves in the history of Choquequirao, today is a slower-paced day to rest, reflect, and enjoy Cusco at your own rhythm. Depending on your departure time, you can spend the morning wandering the city’s charming cobblestone streets, where centuries-old Inca stone walls blend seamlessly with elegant Spanish colonial architecture.

For those who wish to explore a little more before leaving, there are countless possibilities: visit the San Pedro Market, where the vibrant colors of fruits, vegetables, flowers, and artisan products create a lively atmosphere; step inside the Qorikancha Temple, once the most important temple of the Inca Empire and later transformed into the Santo Domingo Convent; or simply sit in the Plaza de Armas, sipping a cup of coca tea while watching the city come to life.

Cusco’s neighborhoods also offer hidden gems — the bohemian district of San Blas is perfect for discovering local art galleries, craft workshops, and cozy cafés, while the streets surrounding Hatun Rumiyoc hold the famous Twelve-Angled Stone, an impressive example of Inca masonry.

At the scheduled time, we provide your transfer to the airport or bus terminal, ensuring a smooth and comfortable departure. As you leave, you carry with you not only photographs, but also the memories of breathtaking landscapes, quiet starry nights, and the sense of accomplishment from completing one of Peru’s most rewarding treks.
