Description

The Lares Trek is a spectacular alternative to the Inca Trail, offering a perfect blend of cultural immersion, breathtaking mountain landscapes, and an authentic glimpse into traditional Andean life. Over the course of four days, you will traverse high–altitude passes, walk through fertile valleys, and discover remote villages where Quechua–speaking communities maintain their centuries–old traditions. Snow–capped peaks, turquoise glacial lakes, and herds of llamas and alpacas create an unforgettable backdrop to this journey.

Unlike other treks, the Lares route is less crowded, allowing for a more peaceful and personal connection with the land and its people. You will share warm smiles with local weavers, witness intricate textile–making techniques, and enjoy hearty Andean meals prepared with fresh local ingredients. The trek culminates with a visit to the legendary Machu Picchu, where ancient history and natural beauty merge in perfect harmony.

We begin our adventure with an early morning pickup from your hotel in Cusco, followed by a scenic drive through the Sacred Valley. Along the way, we pass picturesque agricultural terraces, Inca ruins, and small Andean towns before arriving at Lares Village (3,200 m / 10,498 ft). Here, we take the opportunity to relax in the soothing natural hot springs, surrounded by mountain landscapes.

After a hearty lunch prepared by our cook, we meet our muleteers and begin our trek towards Cuncani, a small, picturesque village nestled at 3,750 m (12,303 ft). The hike offers a gentle introduction to the Andean terrain, with stunning views of peaks and open valleys. Upon arrival, we set up camp and enjoy a freshly prepared dinner under the starry Andean sky.

The views from the pass are breathtaking, with panoramic vistas of snow–capped peaks and emerald valleys.

From the pass, we descend to Ipsaycocha Lake, a serene and reflective body of water surrounded by rugged mountains. This is a perfect spot for rest, photography, and contemplation. We set up our campsite on the lake’s shore and enjoy the peaceful atmosphere while our team prepares dinner.

We have the chance to interact with locals dressed in traditional attire, gaining insight into their agricultural practices and centuries–old customs.

By midday, we reach the charming town of Ollantaytambo, known for its impressive Inca fortress and cobblestone streets. After exploring this historical site, we board the train to Aguas Calientes (Machu Picchu Pueblo), where we spend the night in a comfortable hotel.
