Description

Cusco, the capital of the Inca Empire, proudly bears the title of Archaeological Capital of the Americas, as there is no other place on the continent where the monumental remains of a great civilization are so easily accessible and still so well preserved. Cusco is also a museum city, where the contrasts between the native and the Western, the historical and the modern, give it a mystical beauty.

We can divide Cusco into three main destinations: the City of Cusco, with its ruins, temples, churches, mansions, and archaeological complexes; Machu Picchu, the “Lost City of the Incas,” considered one of the world’s archaeological jewels; and the Sacred Valley of the Incas, with its pleasant climate, fertile land, plains, and spectacular views, providing the backdrop for picturesque towns, impressive terraces, and important archaeological sites. Among them are: Yucay, where the Inca terraces behind the town remain intact; Pisac, the largest Inca complex; Ollantaytambo, a strategic military, religious, and agricultural center during the Inca Empire; Maras, salt mines that have supplied mineral salt to Cusco since pre-Inca times; and Moray, circular terraces resembling the fingerprints of a giant, used by the Incas to adapt crops to new climates, evidence of the advanced agricultural knowledge they achieved.

The temperate climate and unique geography make the Sacred Valley an ideal location for outdoor sports such as rafting, mountain biking, mountaineering, hiking, and more.

This program is a perfect synthesis of the Cusco region, in which you will visit the three main attractions of this magical destination in 9 days.

Day 03: Lima / Paracas / Excursion to the Ballestas Islands – Ica: Huacachina Adventure on Dune Buggies
  • Today we will depart very early, at 3:45 a.m., towards Paracas on a 3.5-hour journey covering approximately 240 kilometers south of Lima. Upon arrival at the Paracas Peninsula, home to the most important wildlife sanctuary on the Peruvian coast, we will embark on a guided boat tour to the Ballestas Islands.
  • During the trip, we will stop to observe the enigmatic figure of the Candelabro, an impressive geoglyph etched on the slope of a hill facing Paracas Bay. No one knows who created this figure or why. Many hypotheses exist regarding its origin: some believe it is related to the Nazca Lines, located about 200 kilometers further south, while others attribute it to ancient pirates who supposedly used it as a navigational reference due to the dense fog of the area. Our captain will pause in front of the figure as the local guide provides an explanation.
  • We will then continue towards the Ballestas Islands. Once there, visitors will enjoy a breathtaking marine setting teeming with birds and sea lions. From our boat, we will circle around the islands, passing through caves and natural rock formations that host abundant marine wildlife, including guano birds, boobies, pelicans, terns, Humboldt penguins, sea lions, dolphins, and more. After exploring the islands, we will return by boat to El Chaco pier.
  • Continuing our journey, we will head to the Huacachina Lagoon, surrounded by palm trees, carob trees, and white sand dunes. From here, we will begin an exciting adventure tour through the Ica desert in 4x4 dune buggies, driven by expert pilots who take us into areas inaccessible to other vehicles, at thrilling speeds. The tour is an adrenaline-filled experience with steep climbs and descents on giant dunes, featuring jumps, shouts, and incredible laughter—an experience that must be lived to be fully understood. Riding in dune buggies is a truly unique adventure, offering 100% adrenaline.
  • During the excursion, you will also have the opportunity to try sandboarding, one of the most popular adventure sports in recent years. With prior technical instruction from the driver, you may attempt it in various positions: sitting, lying down, or standing (for those with experience). The tour can be customized to the client’s preference, whether a smooth ride or full adrenaline. Multiple stops will be made atop the dunes to take photos, admire the stunning desert landscape, and view the dry lagoon of Orovilca. If the tour takes place in the afternoon (last departure at 4:30 p.m.), we may witness a spectacular sunset, weather permitting. At the end of the excursion, you will enjoy a panoramic view of the Huacachina Oasis in all its splendor from the top of the dune. Free time will be provided in Huacachina for photos or to purchase souvenirs.
  • Finally, we will transfer to the bus station (Cruz del Sur) for the return trip to Lima. Upon arrival, reception and transfer to your selected hotel.

Meals: Breakfast on board (Cruz del Sur).

  • In the afternoon, we will enjoy a guided tour of the city of Cusco, visiting the Main Square, the Cathedral, and the Temple of the Sun, or Korikancha. The excursion then continues outside the city to explore the Inca sites of Qenqo, Tambomachay, Puca Pucara, and the impressive Fortress of Sacsayhuamán, strategically built on a hill overlooking Cusco. This site is famous for its massive carved stones, assembled with astonishing precision to form the outer walls of the complex. Some of these stones exceed 9 meters in height and weigh more than 350 tons.

Day 05: Cusco – Sacred Valley of the Incas / Moray & Maras Salt Mines (VIP)

The Sacred Valley of the Incas, located at an altitude of 2,790 m.a.s.l., includes Chinchero, the Moray agricultural terraces, the Maras Salt Mines, Urubamba, and Ollantaytambo, each with archaeological remains built by different Inca rulers. Historically, the Sacred Valley was one of the main agricultural production centers due to the richness of its land; today, it is where the best quality corn is grown.

Our first stop will be in Chinchero, which still preserves its traditional textile art and pottery. Here we will visit its colonial church, which features some of the most important 15th–17th century paintings. We will then continue to Moray, an agricultural research center where the Incas carried out crop experiments at different altitudes.

Next, we visit the Maras Salt Mines, which have more than 3,000 pools of different sizes and dimensions. These pools belong to local families, who during the dry season collect the salt, treat it with iodine, and sell it in the market.

Continuing our journey, we will arrive at Urubamba, where we will enjoy a buffet lunch. Afterward, we will visit the town of Ollantaytambo, dating back to the 15th century, with its remarkable Inca fortress and urban design. Finally, we will visit Pisac, known for its impressive archaeological site and bustling handicraft market.

Día 06: Machu Picchu – Cusco
  • Early in the morning, you will have breakfast at your hotel. Transfer to the Ollantaytambo train station and board your train for a 2-hour journey to Aguas Calientes, the town at the foot of Machu Picchu, discovered in 1911 by the American explorer Hiram Bingham.
  • Upon arrival in Aguas Calientes, we will ascend to the “Lost City of the Incas” on a 25-minute bus ride, zigzagging up the mountainside.
  • We will tour the ruins for approximately 3 hours. Our guide will explain the surprising level of technology achieved by the builders of this incredible site. The precise accuracy in the construction of massive stone structures, the water supply channels that reveal profound hydraulic knowledge, the stairways carved into the living rock of the mountain, and the Intihuatana (or “the highest point of the Sun”), which served as a solar calendar regulating sowing and harvesting, are tangible expressions of the Incas’ profound knowledge and technological advancement.
  • All of these constructions, along with the Temple of the Sun, the Royal Tomb, the Priest’s House, the Inca Baths, and the Temple of the Three Windows, allow us to travel back in time and, with the help of our guide, relive the existence of those truly admirable builders.
  • Back in Aguas Calientes, lunch at a local restaurant (not included).
  • In the afternoon, we will take the train back to Ollantaytambo, where our representative will be waiting for your transfer to Cusco. Free evening to enjoy the festivities around the Plaza de Armas.
