  • The excursion continues outside the city to visit the Inca complexes of Kenko, Tambomachay, Puca Pucara, and the impressive Fortress of Sacsayhuamán, strategically built on a hill overlooking Cusco. It is famous for its enormous carved stones, assembled with astonishing precision, forming the external walls of the complex. Some of these stones exceed 9 meters in height and weigh more than 350 tons.

Day 02: Cusco – Aguas Calientes – Machu Picchu
  • Early in the morning, you will have breakfast at the hotel and then head to the train station for a 3.5-hour journey to the town of Aguas Calientes, located at the foot of Machu Picchu, discovered in 1911 by the American explorer Hiram Bingham.
  • Upon arrival in Aguas Calientes, we will ascend to the “Lost City of the Incas” and one of the New Seven Wonders of the World with a 25-minute bus ride, zigzagging up the mountain slope. We will explore the ruins for approximately 3 hours.
  • Our guide will explain the astonishing level of technology achieved by the builders of this incredible site, including the precise construction of massive stone walls, the water supply channels that reveal advanced hydraulic knowledge, stairways carved directly into the mountain’s rock, and the Intihuatana (or “the highest point of the Sun”), which functioned as a solar calendar regulating agricultural cycles. These features, along with the Temple of the Sun, the Royal Tomb, the Priest’s House, the Inca Baths, and the Temple of the Three Windows, allow us to travel back in time and, with the guide’s narration, relive the existence of those truly admirable builders.
  • Back in Aguas Calientes, you may enjoy lunch at local restaurants.
  • Overnight in Aguas Calientes.

Día

Day 03: Aguas Calientes – Ollantaytambo – Sacred Valley
  • Upon your arrival from Aguas Calientes, you will be welcomed at the Ollantaytambo train station and then transferred to the Fortress and Citadel of Ollantaytambo, built to guard the entrance to this part of the valley and to protect it from possible invasions by jungle inhabitants. We will have the opportunity to walk through the town’s narrow streets, gaining a clear idea of how this site functioned as a military, religious, and cultural center during the Inca Empire.
  • Lunch will be served at a local restaurant in the Sacred Valley of the Incas (not included).
  • The tour continues with panoramic views of the entire Sacred Valley as we pass through several Andean towns. We will also enjoy a panoramic view of the Inca citadel of Pisac and visit the traditional Indian Market in the town of Pisac, held on Tuesdays, Thursdays, and Sundays. Here, you will have the chance to experience local traditions up close and bargain with vendors. (On Sundays, a mass is celebrated in Quechua, the native language).

Day 04: Cusco – Maras Salt Mines – Moray
  • We will enjoy a guided visit to the non-traditional circuit of Moray, a unique archaeological site of its kind. It consists of giant natural depressions or hollows in the earth’s surface, which were used to build agricultural terraces with their respective irrigation canals. What is most striking is the difference in average annual temperature between the top and the bottom of the depressions, which can reach up to 15°C in the main depression, about 30 meters deep.
  • Due to its climatic conditions and other characteristics, Moray was an important center for the domestication, acclimatization, and hybridization of wild plant species, which were modified or adapted for human consumption.
  • We will then head to the Salt Mines of Maras, located 7 km from Moray. On the way, we will pass through a typical Spanish-style village called Maras. To the northwest of the town lie the famous salt mines, also known as the “Salt Pans.” They are made up of around 3,000 small pools, each averaging 5 m², built on the slope of the Qaqawiñay mountain. During the dry season, these pools are filled every three days with saltwater that emerges from a natural spring located at the top of the site. As the water evaporates, the salt gradually solidifies over the course of about a month, forming a layer of approximately 10 centimeters. The salt is later broken up, granulated, bagged, and distributed to the markets of the region. Today, this salt is iodized, making it safe for consumption.
  • Return to Cusco.

Meals: Breakfast

Day 05: Cusco – Southern Valley / Tipón – Pikillacta – Andahuaylillas – Cusco
  • Breakfast at the hotel. We will pick you up and head towards the Southern Valley, where we will enjoy a guided tour of several important archaeological and cultural sites.
  • Our first stop will be Tipón, an Inca complex that demonstrates the advanced hydraulic engineering of the time, with impressive irrigation systems still in operation today. We will then continue to Pikillacta, a pre-Inca site belonging to the Wari culture, where we will appreciate its terraces, walls, and extensive urban layout.
  • Finally, we will visit Andahuaylillas, home to the famous church known as the “Sistine Chapel of the Americas”, built in 1580. Its interior is a striking example of Andean baroque art, filled with colonial paintings, murals, and gold-leaf altars, offering an unmatched expression of colonial religious art in South America.
  • Return to Cusco and enjoy a festive evening in the city.
    Overnight in Cusco.

Day 06: Cusco – Puno
  • Early in the morning, we will depart by tourist bus towards the city of Puno (3,860 m.a.s.l.). Along the way, we will pass by the Huacarpay Lagoon, offering a spectacular view of the mountains reflected in its calm waters.
  • Our journey continues to the picturesque town of Andahuaylillas, where we will visit the Church of San Pedro de Andahuaylillas, often called the “Sistine Chapel of the Americas” due to its remarkable colonial art and frescoes that cover its walls, baseboards, ceilings, and facades.
  • We will then stop at Raqchi, to visit the spectacular Inca sanctuary built by Pachacútec and dedicated to the great Inca god Wiracocha. It features an impressive central wall with a stone base and adobe upper walls. Surrounding the temple are numerous ancient constructions that once served as houses and storage facilities.
  • About 70 km further, we will pass through La Raya Ranch, where we can observe herds of vicuñas and llamas. Continuing across the Collao Plateau, we will stop at the town of Ayaviri, an important livestock and textile center, to visit the Kalasaya Temple, which belonged to the ancient Pucará culture.
  • We will enjoy a buffet lunch in a peaceful countryside setting, where we can taste the best of regional cuisine. Arrival in the afternoon to Puno, with transfer to your selected hotel. Evening at leisure – we recommend dining at the hotel.

These ancient lake dwellers, known as the “Water Tribe”, build their own islands by adding new layers of totora reeds regularly. They also use this material to construct their homes and boats. After sharing their traditions and daily life with the islanders, the journey continues towards Amantani Island.
  • Amantani is inhabited by Quechua-speaking natives who still live according to their ancestral traditions. Their main activities include pottery and the production of fine textiles. The positive energy of this island is so strong that it is often referred to as the “Island of Love.”

  • The city of Puno was founded on November 4, 1668, under the name San Carlos de Puno, in honor of King Charles II of Spain. Puno was also the center of the great highland civilization movement of Lake Titicaca, where the most ancient urban center of the region, Pucará, was organized. Here, the domestication of high-Andean plants and animals was completed, giving rise to the Tiahuanaco civilization.
